Periodic eye and vision examinations are an important part of preventive health care. Generally, there are no obvious signs or symptoms associated with many eye and vision problems, and when symptoms do occur it could pose a serious problem. An annual eye exam is the key to prevention and an early diagnosis. An early diagnosis of eye and vision problems, followed by treatment is important for maintaining good vision and eye health, and even preventing vision loss.
Everyone needs regular eye exams. Regular eye exams are Particularly important if you have risk factors or a family history of eye problems. Children should have their vision checked at ages 6 months, 3 years, and before the first grade. Adults should have an eye exam at least every two years and annually after age 60. Your doctor may recommend more frequent more frequent exams if you have a health condition such as diabetes or high blood pressure, work in a visually demanding job, or take medications that can affect your eyesight.
